Sailing in Weymouth and Portland

Don't miss...

The excellent sailing waters of Weymouth and Portland are some of the most beautiful and safe waters in the UK and provide a fantastic base for cruising or racing. If you're planning a passage along the South Coast then Weymouth Harbour is an ideal stop over for coastal cruising or in preparation for a channel crossing to France or the Channel Islands.

Weymouth boasts one of the shortest passages across to France bringing you to the Cherbourg Peninsula.

Weymouth Harbour provides a wide range of high quality boating facilities which include water and electricity supplies for visitors at all berths, toilets and showers, laundry facilities and diesel fuelling jetty. All this is situated only a stones throw away from Weymouth Town Centre. A wide variety of places to eat, top attractions and ample shops provide visitors with plenty of things to see and do during their stay.

Weymouth Harbour has a great number of vessels visiting throughout the year and can easily cater for large groups of visiting boats, so if you belong to an owners club Weymouth would be a fantastic location for your annual rally - but don't forget to book in advance. For detailed information on Weymouth Harbour including advance booking, bridge lifting times, etc, contact the Weymouth Harbour Office Tel: 01305 838423 or VHF Channel 12, call sign "Weymouth Harbour".

Yacht or dinghy racing is organised by local sailing clubs who also organise Weymouth's annual Sailing Regatta. Boat owner, or not, there are plenty of opportunities to race during the season. The races are professionally organised and include race planning and courses, safety cover and winners awards.

The Harbour Department of Weymouth & Portland Borough Council produce a Weymouth Harbour Facilities and Local Services Guide. The guide, which is updated annually, gives in depth information on the area including tide tables and mooring facilities. For further information on Weymouth Harbour click here.

Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) opened in 2004 with strong support from the RYA. Set up as a "Sailing Centre of Excellence", the Academy is located within the former Royal Naval Air Station, HMS Osprey, Portland. This site covers approximately seven acres and launches directly into the sheltered water of Portland Harbour. Immediately outside the harbour magnificent sailing is also found in the famous waters of Weymouth Bay.

WPNSA are very keen to welcome new members and to encourage further use of the excellent facilities for events and championships. The Academy has hosted Olympic Sailing Trials plus National and International Championships for a wide variety of Keel and Dinghy Boat Classes. WPNSA provides a world class venue with large dinghy and car parks and onshore facilities to cater for regattas up to 350/400 boats. Complete race management is available and can be geared to suit individual Class Association's requirements.
