Weymouth and Portland Model Boat Club

The club was started in 1987 by modelling enthusiasts to promote and encourage the hobby and to enjoy the company of others of a similar mind. All types of model boat are included in the Club, with the exception of IC engine power, and today almost all are the electric powered and radio controlled. Model yachts, launches, warships, submarines, lifeboats, working sailing and motor vessels are all included, some built from kits and some scratch built.

The club draws its membership from a wide area around Weymouth and Portland from Bournemouth in the east to Charmouth in the west with even a few from Somerset. Membership is open to all age groups and encourages family participation. Whilst the main aim is to build and sail models, the Club also supports numerous local shows and events with static displays and talks and has been involved in the Weymouth “Spirit of the Sea Festival” over a number of years and recently supported the “Best of Dorset Leisure Show” at the Pavilion.

In 2013 the Club are holding an “Open Sail Day” at Radipole Lake on Sunday 7th July to include various sailing events on the lake throughout the day together with a static display.

The Club uses two venues for general sailing; one at Radipole Lake just to the south of Swannery Bridge and a second at Mangerton Mill which is about 2.5 miles north east of Bridport. Sailing takes place on Sundays at either venue from April to October with Club Meetings held on the first Tuesday in the month at St Nicholas’ Church Hall, Buxton Road.

It is the habit of modellers to hibernate to build and repair models during the winter month but if the weather is good then Sunday afternoon sailings at Radipole Lake take place whatever the season.

The Club is always keen to welcome new members so if you have a desire to sail models in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere why not contact us through the contact page.
